Tomorrow night is a huge night for Strikeforce. Last year the organization took on, not only what many consider the greatest fighter in MMA, but also their top prospect, and the person that was supposed to launch them into contention as one of the most formidable MMA organizations in the world. It is no doubt that Strikeforce is the #2 organization behind the UFC, however the organization is far behind the company in terms of size, money, production, talent, and more. Though this is the case, it can also be said that Strikeforce put quite a bit of stock into Fedor, a decision that has seen little pay off thus far. Fedor has bene known for being a fairly infrequent fighter, and even though The Last Emperor fought a fairly inexperienced fighter in his first bought for the organization, he was far from dominate as he was expected to be.
On Saturday night he faces a more formidable opponent in Fabricio Werdum, and though on paper many are calling this fight a blowout on behalf of Fedor, some see it different. This fight is the first fight in while where Fedor is fighting a consistently successful fighter in quite sometime. You can obviously make the case that his last opponent, Brett Rogers, was successful considering he was undefeated, however the experience factor must be taken into consideration.
Werdum on the other hand, has built up a nice win streak, and definitely has the experience. Werdum had quite a successful stint in the UFC, defeating the likes of Brandon Vera and Gabriel Gonzaga, and he even has a win over current Strikeforce champ Alistair Overeem. His losses include UFC top prospect Junior Dos Santos, and Minotauro Nogueira. Even though Werdum may not be considered one of the best of the best, he is, without a doubt, in the top 10, and makes a great challenge for Fedor.
Werdum’s best hopes of this fight is to take it to the ground, as his jiu jitsu skills are immense. Though this is the case, it will be a tough task to take hold of considering Fedor is a phenomenal wrestler, and has good jiu jitsu skills of his own. Standing with Fedor will surely end badly for Werdum, and his stand up skilles aren’t his strongest suite. Another gameplan Werdum might want to take advantage of is the way of outscoring Fedor. The Last Emperor has been known to take quite a bit of punishment in ground and pound situations, and with Werdum’s ground skills, that could be an opening he may want to expose.
On the rest of the card, the greatest woman’s fighter in the world, Cyborg Santos shows off her skills against Jan Finney, an opponent that many consider less than formidable.Though this is true, the woman’s division in MMA is quite open and untested. So much to the point where anything could happen honestly.
Cung Le/Scott Smith 2 will be a fun fight. Though Smith got the late victory in the first fight after taking an immense amount of punishment, I see Le not making the same mistake twice, thus fighting a smarter fight.
